When to Start Braces?
|
| Traditionally, dentists recommend braces treatment for teens between 12 to 14 years old. In actual fact, there is no age limit for braces treatment. Crossbites
|
| Upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth, can be caused by misalignment of teeth or bone and can affect a single tooth or group of teeth. |

Posterior Crossbite:
The upper back teeth are biting to the inside of lower teeth |

Possible consequences if left untreated:
Shifting of jaws to one side, misaligned jaw growth, wearing down of outer layer of the tooth (enamel). |

Underbite
|
| Lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth, caused by misalignment of teeth or bone. |

Open Bites
|
Anterior Open Bite: The upper and lower front teeth do not meet when back teeth are together.
Posterior Open Bite: The front teeth meet, but the back teeth do not. |

Excessive sucking, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing, swallowing problems, possible speech problems. |

Deep Bite
|
| When the bite is closed, the upper front teeth cover the bottom teeth too much. |

Upper teeth bite into lower gums, lower teeth bite into the roof of the mouth, gum disease, early enamel wear. |

|
|
|
|
Crowding
|
| Teeth become overlapped, rotated or take on a crooked/staggered appearance, due to insufficient space for the teeth to erupt properly from the gum. This may be caused by big teeth or small jawbone or both. |

Difficult to clean, easy to get tooth decay & gum disease. |

Spacing
|
| Too much space between teeth due to missing tooth, undersized tooth, oversized jaws or a combination of these conditions. |

Food get stuck in open areas, possible cavities, gum disease, possible speech problems, unattractive appearance. |

|
|
|
|
Protrusion
|
| Upper front teeth stick out. Teeth may appear protrusive because the upper jaw is too far forward, the lower jaw is too far back, the teeth grew at an angle, or a combination of these conditions. |

Possible consequences if left untreated:
Potential teeth damage due to accidental breaking, speech problems, dried out oral tissues, unpleasant appearance. |

Bidental Protrusion
|
| Both the upper & lower front teeth stick out. May be caused by genetic or environmental factors like mouth breathing, tongue and lip habits and large tongue. Advanced gum disease may also result in a forward movement of the front teeth. |

Possible consequences if left untreated:
Bidental protrusion makes the closing of lips more difficult and results in unpleasant smile & facial profile. Gum disease will lead to loss of the teeth. |

Abnormal Development of Teeth
|
Teeth may be abnormally formed, and their shape is different from the normal ones. The most common malformed tooth is the upper lateral incisors (the smaller upper front teeth) which become much smaller in size than normal (Peg shaped).
Sometimes teeth may develop in an abnormal position and get stuck inside the jawbone or come out at the wrong position. |

Possible consequences if left untreated:
The abnormal tooth shape can cause poor bite and cause an unpleasant smile. However abnormal positioning of the tooth may cause damage to the adjacent teeth, non-eruption and unpleasant smile. |

Traditional Metal braces |
| |
| |
| Metal braces are a common and affordable type of braces. Although it is visually visible, it remains extremely effective in adjusting the bite and look. Usually, the wire is tied to the brackets with elastic tie (available in different colours) or stainless-steel wire. |

Digitally designed braces – Insignia™ |

Insignia™ is a customised precision appliance where the brackets & wires are designed specifically for the patient’s treatment requirements and efficient tooth movements.
The treatment time for Insignia™ is often shorter, while the cost is much higher than others. |

Self-ligating Braces (Damon™ Braces & Empower2™ Braces) |

These are the latest generation of braces. We mainly use this type of braces at Lou Dental Centre. They are available in both Metal & Clear types.
Empower2™ braces have a patented clip door to keep the wire in place whereas Damon™ braces have a slide door mechanism.
Self-ligating braces have less friction between the wire & brackets and require lesser force to move teeth. Thus, the treatment is less painful when compared to traditional braces. The treatment time may be shorter and oral hygiene is better because there is no elastic tie. |

Traditional Ceramic braces |

Ceramic braces are made from tooth-coloured material that looks less obvious when it is worn (compared to metal braces).
Traditional ceramic braces usually use stainless-steel wire (wires also available in tooth-coloured but they are generally less efficient & expensive).
In deep bite cases, ceramic braces could potentially cause more wear to the surface of opposing teeth. The cost of Ceramic braces is higher than Metal braces. |
